New Yorkers will discover who will be their new city leader this Tuesday, in a contest that will determine who runs and defends the nation's most populous metropolis at a moment when the former president has vowed to send armed forces to the city.

In this context, New York has witnessed a race for mayor that has pitted two distinctly opposing Democrats against one another. The contest has turned into an acrimonious showdown, laced with accusations of racism and Islamophobia, but it is the political differences between the two main candidates that could have significant consequences for how the Democratic party fares in next year's congressional races.

The Rising Progressive

In the progressive corner is Zohran Mamdani, the young progressive candidate whose meteoric rise and grassroots campaign has brought global notice. Representing the old guard is Andrew Cuomo, the ex- Democratic New York governor now running as an independent – and benefiting from the backing of ultra-rich donors and corporations.

As the election approaches, it is Mamdani, the one-time underdog who defeated his opponent in the party primary who is solidly positioned as the leading candidate. Mamdani, who has campaigned on a platform of economic justice and promised to freeze rent for about 2 million city residents, has led Cuomo by significant margins across all surveys conducted in the fall, and it is very much the progressive's race to throw away.

A Bitter Contest

Yet, Cuomo, who resigned as the state's leader in 2021 amid allegations of sexual harassment, has stated clearly he will fight to the finish, and not necessarily in an above-the-belt fashion. He has criticized Mamdani's goals as unachievable, and in the final stretch laughed as a broadcaster made Islamophobic remarks about Mamdani, who is Muslim. Two weeks ago, the independent was widely condemned as bigoted after sharing an AI-generated ad that included a series of racial caricatures and showed his opponent freeing a group of criminals.
