During an first day in office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “transform” New York City, promising “a different age” and an bold start to his term.

A Groundbreaking Figure

The 34-year-old political star, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

“A time such as this is rare and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose grasp the controls for transformation,” Mamdani stated.

Ignoring suggestions to lower expectations, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will rule boldly and broadly.”

Adhering to Democratic Socialist Principles

Mamdani openly embraced his socialist politics. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not compromise my convictions for concern of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to an enthusiastic response.

The ceremony was a dual event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's ascent as a victory over the status quo.

An Ambitious Blueprint

Mamdani now faces one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a platform including:

• Subsidized daycare
• Free buses
• A halt to rent increases for approximately 1 million households
• A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion cost of these services may prove difficult to finance. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating External Challenges

The new mayor will deal with concern from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past comments.

Mamdani has sought to ease these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly surprisingly productive.

The Fundamental Tests of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their success in delivering city upkeep: sanitation, curbing the rodent problem, repairing potholes, and making sure smooth transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's public safety record, citing record low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his address with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
