Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was sentenced of planning a government overthrow in the ninth month and handed more than a 27-year term in jail, but he remained under house arrest pending court reviews.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after "new facts" emerged.

This involved attempting to break his tracking device and a summons to a demonstration that could enable a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a document approving the custody, the judge said data from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's plan to remove the surveillance device to ensure success in his flight.

This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his offspring.

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a senator, called for a meeting of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on online platforms on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your nation, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your couch? I call on you to fight with us."

He said the gathering would be so backers could "pray for his health and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the magistrate's determination was the possibility of Bolsonaro's transfer to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the inquiries revealed a background of organizing to ask for protection through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.

The legal document underscores that the US embassy in the national capital, the capital city, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from the former president's residence.

International Reactions

The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow populist conservative United States President Donald Trump, causing him to impose a half-rate duty on goods coming from Brazil.

He is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in the capital and will experience a custody hearing on the following day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Top Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with tracking devices.

They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be permitted to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he demanded regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other ailments.

Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was convicted of orchestrating a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a scheme which included plans to kill his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.

The plot was prevented because it didn't receive the support of the armed forces officials. Lula was inaugurated without issue on 1 January 2023.

But a week later, on the eighth of January, many his backers stormed and vandalised government buildings in the national capital, Brasília.

The security forces took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.

The justices found that the demonstrators had been provoked by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.

At the time, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.

He was also prohibited from running for public office until 2060 - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the next presidential race.
